I was trying to think of a costume I could use many small lights in to really punch up a costume and what has more crazy lights then a slot machine?

A Working Slot Machine Costume. I liked the idea of being a slot machine but I wanted something that would actually work. I made the box out of insulation. The costume is made, excluding lighting and electronics, of mostly thick cardboard and hot-glue (glue sticks). The wheels, the important part of the “Working” slot machine are styrofoam discs with CD’s glued to the side, mounted on a 12v motor each. On the CD is glued a razor-blade used as a steel bar to stop the wheel electro-magnetically.

The framework (box) of the Slot Machine Costume was hand cut from reflective foam insulation board (the kind for houses, no fiberglass)and taped together with reflective crome tape. I found some images online of slot machines and printed them out on the color plotter here at work (shhhhh)the “reels” area was laminated with clear sticky shelf paper stuff and set against a hole cut in the box backlit by three LED “tap lights” on a foam shelf.

I used two strings of multi-colored LED “rice” lights to line the front perimeter or the box from the inside through small holes and two LED blinking toys (from dollar store, hard to explain them but they were awesome) to make the shoulder lights.

A black long sleeve shirt with one arm painted silver and black gloves finished it off.

Oddly enough, the campground we always go to for their Halloween weekend lost power soon after dark for an hour and she was the blinking beacon of the streets.

While 5 reel (or more) slots give a lot of scope with new ideas and bonus games – 3 reel games are mostly the realm of traditional, straightforward slots. This one is very different, as you will notice as soon as you see the cartoon-like introduction video. The theme is a costume party (fancy dress party). Instead of symbols on reels, you’ll need to match the head, body and legs of different costumes in order to score wins. This turns the perspective of the slot on its side – the body parts come in from the side, and wins are from top to bottom (you’ll complete a whole character). There is a big element of humour in this game – you’ll end up with a knight with stockinged legs – or a robot with chicken feet and a Frankenstein head.

The setting of costume party is against some speakers with beer bottles and paper decorations and balloons on a brick wall. There is a bright logo on the top of the slot and a pump of some kind for the spin button. The costumed characters are big and bold, dominating the centre of the slot. When you spin these become a blur, settling at a new (and often strange) combination of characters very quickly. A funky tune plays in the background, this is varied enough not to get repetitive. You’ll hear a cartoon like whirlwind noise when you hit the spin button.

Graphically, the best part happens when you complete a character. These get a spotlight, while the other (mixed) characters disappear. You’ll be treated to sights like a giant chicken dancing, or a nurse waving her syringe. As an addition, the characters go from greyed out to bright on the pay table. This is known as your ‘guest list’.

You can select from between 1 and 3 characters for each spin and between 1 and 3 coins too. Unlike on many 3 reel slots there is no mathematical benefit to choosing 3 coins – this is purely a personal preference. You can choose your coin size from just 1c and up, making the minimum spin for max characters at lines just 9c. The maximum is $45 per spin ($5 coins). Auto-play is offered.

Pay-outs are for complete characters (or characters which include 2 parts and a wild symbol). The amounts below are based on playing the default 3 coins per spin. Chickens are the lowest paying, though still worth 30 coins for 3. Nurses are next (45), then the cowboy (75) and wonder woman (120). There are 4 higher paying characters, which come in less frequently. These are the knight (255), Astronaut (420), witch (1500) and the monster (5400). It is possible to get more than one character each spin.

The only feature of note for this game is the wild symbol. This is a gorilla body with the word ‘wild’ on it. This will substitute for any other body symbol when the feet and head match up, creating a complete character. There is no extra payment for creating a character using the wild symbol.

Rival gaming has taken an entertaining idea and created a simple yet very playable slots game out of it. The sideways spinning and vertical lines setup does take a few minutes to get used to – though becomes intuitive soon enough. The animations when you complete a character to trigger a win are the highlight of this game. There are 8 of these to watch in total, and each character gets onto your ‘guest list’ after you make a win with them. There is also the element of humour which comes from making combinations of characters which look out of place.

Overall this is an enjoyable slot, which does have the potential to bring you a windfall of more than 5000 coins (via the monster character). Whether it will stand the test of time, I am not so sure. One thing I am sure of is that this is worth a look and will make an entertaining diversion from your regular favourite slots.
